Why do I choose PolyU?

When I apply to school, Tesol and translation can be done at the same time. Featured alumni Hong Kong Finally, I got Tesol from Renmin University of Hong Kong and a number of top 100 QS schools in the UK, as well as some English interpreters and translators' offers. Finally, we chose to go to PolyU on our own, instead of HKU or Britain, mainly for the above two main reasons:

First of all, although the University of Hong Kong ranks very high, but translation, especially interpretation, is my favorite. I would do this kind of work even if I didn't get paid.

Secondly, fortunately, our interview was before the epidemic. In Beijing, I met Mr. Zhang, the head of the team (also our later simultaneous interpretation teacher); Before making the final decision, I also attended the online information conference of the Chinese and Bilingual Department of PolyU. These two contacts let me know something about Mr. Zhang. He is approachable, polite, serious and pragmatic, giving people a sense of security. At that time, I was considering the interpretation major in British schools, but I felt that there were too many ways for schools to recruit students. In contrast, I think polyu's MATI admission process is simple and clear: the first step is to screen resumes; Step two, interview: a paper and a short oral exam. You don't even need a letter of recommendation to apply. It's a very friendly social phobia.

What do we do at Lee University?

Entering Mati is just the first step. In the first semester, the entire program is divided into three classes, each learning to interpret and translate, according to the phonetic order of the last names.

Students of the two interpretation courses will be tested twice during the semester and at the end of the semester. The results of these two tests will determine whether we can enter the interpretation group in the second semester of the world.

At the end of the term, the teacher will ask us to fill out a volunteer form and select an interpretation/translation team. Most students chose the interpretation group, and about a quarter of the students were eventually accepted into the interpretation group. I think this exam is more cruel than the previous school exams, so there was a lot of pressure during that time. You can also console yourself that if you can't join the translation team, you can go home and look for a job online. Later, in the secluded hotel room of my home, I felt like crying when I received an e-mail from my teaching secretary saying that I had been accepted into the translation team.

In addition, MATI's graduation thesis is optional. That is, you can choose not to write a paper, but to study and practice translation.

In general, about 70% of the students who join the interpretation team in the second semester spend their time in interpretation training. The weekly interpretation sessions are a lot of work, some of which are difficult and need to be done in groups, and, of course, it is a way for lazy cancer and Social anxiety disorder patients to interact with their classmates after they have completed their own independent discussions. There are a few translation courses have homework, a small amount, the teacher will be a one-to-one correction, the result of translation is the result of homework. The second semester offers a wide range of elective courses.

The only pity is that this year, due to the epidemic, the internship of the original interpretation team in the United Nations was gone.

When I came to Mati, what kind of teachers and classmates would I meet?

Most students come from the mainland, but there are also compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao. The teaching languages are Mandarin and English, but almost all teachers occasionally provide a Cantonese sentence.

In addition to English and translation, students learn other languages such as French, Japanese, Polish, engineering and business. Students taking these interdisciplinary tests may also have some advantages in terms of employment.

The vast number of students, including students from mainland China, the United States, Britain, Hong Kong and other places, even those who have completed their second master's degree and those who have worked for many years for further study, have a gap after one or two years.

Teachers from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland, some with strong academic attainments and some with practical experience, benefit students no matter what the teacher and classroom style. In particular, under the pressure of the epidemic, Zhang insisted on the opposite to the students on interpretation class, a class did not fall behind. At the end of each class, he would say, “The students are working hard,” and I would say, “Really hard.”. It can be said that Mr. Zhang is impeccable as a translator and a teacher.

In MATI's study and work time, although there is no pressure and great influence, you can forget your troubles. I like a social and interpersonal environment where classmates are friendly, but they respect each other and don't pry into privacy. In the details, I also found that Hong Kong Polytechnic protects students' private information very well, and the teacher knows almost nothing about us during the teaching process; Teacher Zhang may know that after all, he has read our resumes, but he also respects the need for legal protection.

As for study, not a day is used to fishing, almost every day there is a job and do homework double pressure. Such a hard day, now look back, or miss. In less than a year, I had a special feeling about Hong Kong and polyu.
